Florida Bar Application Review for Barry Law Students

It’s critical that an applicant has the ability to not only explain the situations which have been identified as questionable, but to admit their own shortcomings as well.

It’s also extremely important not to rush through an application simply to meet a deadline.

Elizabeth Conan is available to screen Barry Law students’ Florida Bar applications before they’re submitted to the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. She offers solutions that could help mitigate any concerns about negative information.

Elizabeth has been actively representing the interests of Florida Bar applicants since 2008, and she’s revised and strengthened hundreds of Florida Bar applications since then. Contact her confidentially to schedule a Bar application screening.

Character & Fitness Investigations

The Board gives Barry Law applicants who appear before them an opportunity to put troubling past conduct into context, and to explain why it would not impact their work as a Florida attorney, if the Board decides to recommend their admission.

Fear of the unknown is unpleasant, and an applicant’s attorney should be able to shed some light on the Board’s proceedings to help quell that fear. This takes representing applicants at more than a few hearings.

Elizabeth is an attorney experienced in bar admissions. She understands what evidence is necessary to meet the burden of proof, has familiarity with the members of the Board, and can guide the applicant to professionals who could help with admission, if necessary.

Each of the following situations might call an applicant’s character & fitness into question, but generally, none of them will necessarily preclude an applicant from practicing law in Florida:

  • blemishes in academic credentials
  • financial struggles and poor credit
  • law enforcement contacts, detentions, criminal charges
  • living with an addictive disease or mental illness
  • lawsuits or other claims/complaints
  • employment problems
  • poor driving history and DL suspensions

These type of situations present opportunities for a Barry Law applicant to demonstrate to the Board honesty, personal growth and show how applicant has rehabilitated and learned something from their experiences.

Sometimes applicants don’t feel compelled to be honest about information they provide, even if they are not lying per se.

But if a prospective lawyer cannot be fully truthful about themselves now, how can they be trusted to be fully truthful with their clients, colleagues and the courts in the future?

Lack of disclosure can all too easily lead to serious problems with Florida Bar admission. The risks involved with erring on the side of silence are enormous. When in doubt, disclose.

I hired Elizabeth to represent me in an investigative hearing with the FBBE. At the moment I spoke with her for the first time I knew she was the right attorney for me. I'll be honest. I have been a practicing attorney for 22 years and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have issues with the Florida Board of Bar Examiners but when that certified letter came, I was devastated. I immediately called and interviewed several attorneys. All were very nice and outlined their plan of attack.
